Resumen
Esta es la primera publicación sobre música colonial guatemalteca
de Plumsock Mesoamerican Studies en colaboración con CIRMA. En
ella, el musicólogo guatemalteco Dieter Lehnhoff presenta cinco
transcripciones de partituras de obras musicales, hasta ahora inéditas,
de los siglos XVII y XVIII. Por ser piezas musicales de corte religioso,
estas composiciones se conservan en forma manuscrita en el fondo musical
de la catedral metropolitana de Guatemala. El trabajo representa un
esfuerzo por rescatar, preservar, estudiar y divulgar la música
guatemalteca de la época colonial, aspecto importante del patrimonio
cultural del país.
Las obras seleccionadas son una muestra representativa
de la producción artística de destacados compositores
de la época. Las tres primeras datan del siglo XVII y fueron
compuestas por Fernando Franco, Pedro Bermúdez y Gaspar Fernández.
Las otras dos provienen del siglo XVIII y fueron compuestas por Manuel
Joseph de Quirós y Raphael Antonio Castellanos.
Dichas composiciones son típicas del legado
musical de la época colonial, compuestas para ocasiones específicas
y sobre todo para festividades religiosas. El libro incluye una sección
con notas biográficas sobre los compositores seleccionados. Las
partituras fueron transcritas de acuerdo a la notación original.
Abstract
This is Plumsock Mesoamerican Studies and CIRMA’s first publication
about Guatemala’s colonial music. Guatemalan musicologist Dieter
Lehnhoff presents five transcriptions of music scores of hitherto unpublished
works from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As these are musical
pieces from the religious realm, the compositions were kept in manuscript
form in the music archives of the metropolitan cathedral of Guatemala
City. The work represents an effort to recover, preserve, study, and
make known Guatemalan music from the colonial period, an important aspect
of the cultural patrimony of the country.
The selected works constitute a representative sample
of the artistic production of distinguished composers of that time.
The first three pieces date from the seventeenth century and were composed
by Fernando Franco, Pedro Bermúdez, and Gaspar Fernández.
The other two are from the eighteenth century and were composed by Manuel
Joseph de Quirós and Raphael Antonio Castellanos.
The compositions are typical of Guatemala’s
colonial musical heritage and were written for special occasions, mostly
religious festivities. The book includes a biographical section about
the composers. The transcriptions are faithful to the original manuscripts.
