Resumen
Como lo indica el título, este volumen ofrece un extenso listado
bibliográfico de trabajos sobre la geología de Guatemala
publicados entre 1966 y 1983. Los compiladores persiguen el propósito
de actualizar dos bibliografías sobre el mismo tema publicadas
anteriormente por Koerdell M. Maldonado y el Instituto Geográfico
Nacional en 1958 y 1966 respectivamente.
En la introducción, los compiladores señalan los diversos
factores que han estimulado la publicación de trabajos sobre
la geología de Guatemala a partir de 1965. Entre estos se destacan,
el programa de mapeo geológico realizado por el instituto geográfico
nacional (hoy Instituto Geográfico Militar) en estrecha colaboración
con varias universidades norteamericanas, el cual dió como resultado
numerosas tesis, mapas e investigaciones posteriores. Asimismo, la actividad
volcánica, continua y variada, en zonas relativamente accesibles
ha estimulado investigaciones en vulcanología y campos afines.
El desastroso terremoto de 1976 en Guatemala atrajo también atención
mundial por parte de muchas disciplinas. Finalmente, el proyecto de
barrenado en mar adentro (Deep Sea Drilling Project) en la zona de la
fosa submarina mesoamericana de Guatemala ha igualmente producido numerosas
publicaciones.
Además del listado bibliográfico, el volumen contiene
una breve introducción, una lista de abreviaturas utilizadas
en las referencias bibliográficas y una lista de referencias
sobre mapas geológicos de Centroamérica y Guatemala. La
serie de números en las citas representa, en el orden correspondiente:
volumen, número de tomo, número de página.
Abstract
As the title indicates, this book gives an extensive bibliographic
list of the works published between 1966 and 1983 about Guatemala’s
geology. The editors’ objective is to update two previously published
bibliographies about this topic, by Koerdell M. Maldonado and by the
Instituto Geográfico Nacional in 1958 and 1966, respectively.
The editors show in the Introduction the diverse factors that have
given rise to the publication of works about the geology of Guatemala
since 1965. Standing out among them are the geological mapping projects
carried out by the National Geographic Institute (today the Military
Geographic Institute/Instituto Geográfico Militar) in close collaboration
with various North American universities which resulted in numerous
theses, map and research projects. Also, the ongoing and varied volcanic
activity in relatively accessible regions have stimulated research in
volcanology and related fields. The 1976 earthquake in Guatemala attracted
worldwide attention on the part of many disciplines. Lastly, the Deep
Sea Drilling Project in the submarine Mesoamerican fault of Guatemala
has produced many publications as well.
In addition to the bibliographic listings, the work contains a short
introduction, a list of abbreviations used in the bibliographic references
and a list of references about geological maps from Central America
and Guatemala. The series of numbers in the quotes represent in corresponding
order: the volume, tome number, and page number.
